In the past eight and a half years, there have been 34 deaths and 34 injuries due to elevator accidents in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and Palghar. The average annual fatality rate has more than doubled since 2018-19, with poor maintenance and aging equipment being identified as primary factors. In the rest of Maharashtra, an average of 10 accidents occur annually, with human error and mechanical malfunctions being the main causes. Officials are considering new regulations to mandate the replacement of lifts every 20 years. Proper implementation of existing laws is also needed.
