Andal, the only female among the 12 Alvar saints of South India, lived in the seventh century. She was devoted to Vishnu and desired to marry his form, Ranganath. When found wearing garlands meant for the deity, Vishnu blessed her actions. Eventually, she was guided to the Srirangam temple, where she attained divine union.
