Scientists from NIWA in Wellington have discovered a new species of ghost shark named Harriotta avia in the deep waters around Australia and New Zealand. These chimaeras live on the ocean floor at depths reaching 2,600 metres and feed on crustaceans. The discovery highlights the challenges of studying these elusive deep-sea creatures.
