Over the past 10 years, India has added nearly 200 vascular surgeons taking the tally to nearly 350. Yet, the number of needless lower limb amputations across the country has risen by nearly 50% to 1.2 lakh a year. Each of these limbs could have been saved if hospitals — government or private — had a vascular surgeon, who is trained to perform surgery on blood vessels in the body including the brain and limbs.
