Merely depositing rent doesn’t impart tenancy rights: Calcutta HC

The Calcutta High Court has ruled that depositing rent with the rent controller does not grant tenancy rights. The court made this observation while hearing a case where a woman had transferred her tenancy to her adopted daughter. The daughter claimed that the tenancy had passed to her after her mother’s death, but the court rejected this claim. The court stated that only spouses and children are entitled to inherit tenancy rights, and since the daughter was not biological, she was not entitled to inherit the tenancy.
