Japan’s aging population: 1 in 10 people are now 80 or older

Japan has been labelled the “oldest country in the world” as one in ten people in the country are aged 80 or above. Nearly 30% of Japan’s population is aged 65 or older, which presents challenges in terms of support and care for the elderly. Japan also has one of the lowest birth rates globally. By 2040, it is projected that individuals aged 65 and older will make up 34.8% of Japan’s population
