Houston officials have allocated $5 million to a fund aimed at relocating residents from neighborhoods near a rail yard contaminated with cancer-linked wood preservative. The Union Pacific rail yard, located near historically Black neighborhoods, has been blamed for an increase in cancer cases. The wood preservative creosote, used at the site until the 1980s, has contaminated the groundwater. The relocation program could cost up to $35 million, with the city seeking additional funding sources.
