Mexico sees migrant ‘crisis’ at US-Mexico border as numbers spike

Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena has described the situation at the US-Mexico border as a “crisis,” with a recent increase in migrants causing trade delays and security checks. Mexican officials are considering “assisted returns” of migrants to Ecuador, Venezuela, and Colombia, in addition to deportation flights to Central American nations. Barcena emphasized the need to improve trade at border crossings after a major rail freight operator suspended operations due to migrants jumping on cargo trains. Over 400,000 migrants have crossed the dangerous Darien Gap this year, double the figure from last year. The US has implemented new policies to deter illegal crossings and is considering stronger collaboration with Mexico in semiconductor manufacturing.
