SC reserves verdict on reconsideration of 1998 judgment granting immunity to lawmakers from prosecution

The Supreme Court of India has reserved its verdict on whether members of Parliament (MPs) and members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) enjoy immunity from prosecution for accepting bribes. A seven-judge bench is reconsidering a 1998 judgment that granted MPs and MLAs immunity in bribery cases related to making speeches or voting in the legislature. Solicitor General argued that bribery is a complete offence when a bribe is given and accepted.
