Shakespeare, first shots and a cinematic universe of spies: Vishal Bhardwaj on ‘Khufiya’

Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, known for his adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays, has expressed his hesitation to return to the bard’s work. However, his latest film ‘Khufiya’ includes a scene featuring a theatrical production of ‘Julius Caesar,’ unintentionally paying homage to Shakespeare. Bhardwaj explained that the scene was included because Brutus is known for betrayal, and he had considered naming the film ‘Khufiya: Operation Brutus.’ The director also revealed his desire to create a comedy trilogy and a cinematic universe centered around spies with ‘Khufiya’ as the beginning.
