Kalamandalam likely to become state university
The government of Kerala is considering developing the Kerala Kalamandalam deemed-to-be university into a state university with wider jurisdiction. The government has appointed dancer Mallika Sarabhai as the chancellor of Kalamandalam. It is unclear who will be recommended as the chancellor when the institution becomes a university. The government plans to develop Kalamandalam as a cultural university, allowing collaboration with universities and institutions outside the state and country. The conversion to a state university would provide access to funding from the UGC, addressing issues of funding and staff shortage.
