Last surviving witness of 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre passes away at 102

Hughes Van Ellis, one of the last survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, has passed away at the age of 102. Known as “Uncle Red,” Ellis was a lead plaintiff in a reparations lawsuit against the city of Tulsa, seeking accountability for the massacre’s aftermath. Ellis testified before the House Judiciary subcommittee in 2021, demanding reparations for survivors and descendants.
