NMC’s MBBS seat allocation reform draws flak, criticized for penalizing progressive state

The National Medical Commission’s decision to limit the number of MBBS seats in each state to 100 per million population has drawn criticism. While the move aims to reduce regional disparities in healthcare professional availability, many states, including Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and others, have opposed it. They argue that it encroaches on states’ rights, penalizes those with robust healthcare infrastructure, and restricts investments in the health sector. Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister has urged the Prime Minister to reconsider the decision.
