For Punjab, popularising canal irrigation to be uphill task
The AAP government in Punjab is working to promote the use of canal water for irrigation in the state. Currently, only 21% of irrigation in Punjab is done with canal water, while the remaining 79% relies on underground water. The government is aiming to reverse this trend and increase the use of canal water. The state-wide drive includes restoring abandoned water courses and motivating farmers to switch to canal water. Punjab has also approached the central government for a special package to rejuvenate the canal system.
