Same-sex marriage to adoption rights: Key points from SC verdict
The Supreme Court of India has refused to grant legal recognition to same-sex marriage under the Special Marriage Act, stating that it is the responsibility of Parliament to change the law. The court unanimously ruled that there is no fundamental right to marriage for same-sex couples. However, transgender persons in heterosexual relationships have the right to marry under existing laws. The court also delivered a mixed verdict on adoption rights for queer couples. The court stressed the need to eliminate discrimination against the queer community and ensure their access to goods, services, and protection from harassment.
