Speaker supreme in House, but under us as a poll tribunal: SC

The Supreme Court has set a deadline of October 30 for the Maharashtra assembly speaker to provide a time schedule for concluding the proceedings on cross petitions filed by rival factions. The court expressed dissatisfaction with the speaker’s conduct and warned that it would set the schedule if he failed to do so. The disqualification petitions, seeking to disqualify over 80 MLAs, have been pending since May.
