Researchers at Caltech have used advanced imaging techniques to study the Long Valley Caldera, a dormant supervolcano in California. They have produced detailed underground images of the volcano’s magma chamber, revealing that it is covered by a solidified lid of crystallized rock. The research was conducted using fiber optic cables and distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), with the team measuring over 2,000 seismic events over 18 months.
