The Durga Puja economy in Bengal is estimated to have reached Rs 50,000 crore this year, a 20% increase from the previous year. Kolkata is expected to contribute around Rs 10,000 crore to this figure. The surge in business is attributed to increased spending by puja organizers, advertisers, retailers, and restaurants. The cultural heritage tag given to Kolkata’s Durga Puja by UNESCO and the recovery from the pandemic are cited as reasons for the higher turnout and increased sponsorships and advertising revenue.
