When Google was ‘worried’ about Apple creating its own search engine
The US government has accused Google of monopolizing internet search in an antitrust trial, alleging that the company spent billions to become the default search browser on Apple devices. Court documents suggest that Google was concerned about losing revenue to an Apple-made competitor, leading to certain limits being established in their deal. Apple had looked for alternatives to Google, including talks with Microsoft and DuckDuckGo, but ultimately decided to stick with Google. Apple’s acquisition of search technology startups and the hiring of former Google executive John Giannandrea has fueled speculation about the company developing its own search engine.
