Khattar govt wipes off ‘weird’ village names from Hry
The government of Haryana, India, has renamed 17 villages with “embarrassing, outlandish or outrageous” names. Villages like Ganda, Kinnar, and Kutia Kheri have been given new names like Ajit Nagar, Gaibi Nagar, and Veerpur. Muslim-sounding village names have also been changed, such as Mustafabad becoming Saraswati Nagar and Mohammadheri becoming Brahampuri. The renaming process took place from June 2015 to August 2021, with residents of these villages having long sought a change due to the embarrassment and humiliation associated with the old names.
