BARC to remove nuclear elements from defunct Mumbai lab

By on November 5, 2023 0 21 Views

The Institute of Science in Mumbai plans to relocate a nuclear source, Californium-252 and Plutonium Beryllium, that has been sitting in an out-of-bounds basement. The nuclear source, imported in the late 1970s and early 1980s, has completed 14 half lives and will be removed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. The institute, once renowned for its nuclear chemistry laboratory, has declined due to lack of funds and attention from the state government. However, plans are in place to expand research in high-end areas after the nuclear source is safely relocated.
