In blow to Tesla, India says not planning to cut EV import tax
India’s government has stated that it is not considering reducing taxes on imported electric vehicles, a move that could potentially delay Tesla’s entry into the Indian market. The government’s current policies, aimed at encouraging domestic and foreign investment in the EV industry, do not include exemptions or subsidies on import duties for electric vehicles. This is a surprising shift in stance, as the government was previously working on a policy that would have allowed international companies like Tesla to import electric cars at concessional tax rates if they committed to manufacturing in India.
