Rain pounds TN: Holiday in 4 districts, many trains cancelled

Very heavy rain under the influence of a cyclonic circulation lashed the four southern districts of Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari on Saturday and Sunday. The red alert is effective till 1 pm on Monday. Several areas of Tirunelveli including the district collector’s office are flooded. Madurai railway division deploys additional staff at Kovilpatti to man the counter and complete the demand for refund of tickets after four south-bound trains were terminated there. Schools in Madurai are open today. Chennai Egmore – Tuticorin Pearl City Express, Nizamuddin – Kanniyakumari Tirukkural Express, Madurai – Punalur Express, and Chennai Egmore – Tirunelveli Express short-terminated at Kovilpatti on Monday morning. Kayalpatnam in Tuticorin records 93 cm rainfall in 24 hours. 45,000 cusecs water is being released into Thamirabarani River from the reservoirs in Tirunelveli district.
