Before northeast monsoon, Chennai may set a record for rain this year

Chennai has experienced excess rainfall during the non-monsoon months, with historical data showing that this is not uncommon. The city’s weather stations have broken rain records in six seasons since the 1870s. Normally, Chennai receives around 450mm of rain during the June-September period, but this year it has received 675mm and 847.2mm at two weather stations. Meteorologists attribute this to convection and a secondary circulation in the atmosphere over Tamil Nadu. Overall, Chennai has seen a 15% increase in rainfall during the southwest monsoon season in the past 20-30 years.
