Blocked: 600 numbers of cheats ‘calling kin from abroad’ for help

The cyber cell of the Chandigarh Police has blocked 602 suspected mobile numbers or SIM cards used by online fraudsters. The fraudsters would pose as relatives living abroad and ask for financial assistance after getting involved in legal trouble. Most of their victims were elderly people. The cyber cell has registered 96 FIRs and arrested 86 online cheats, saving public money of Rs 8 crore. The cyber cell is also conducting awareness camps in schools and colleges to educate people about cyber fraud.
