California county sues utility alleging equipment sparked wildfires
Orange County, California, has filed lawsuits against Southern California Edison, alleging that the electric utility’s negligence caused two wildfires. The county claims that an electrical failure on a utility pole and contact between a telecommunications wire and an electric conductor sparked the Coastal Fire and Silverado Fire, respectively. The lawsuits seek reimbursement for damages and expenses incurred as a result of the fires. Similar cases have linked utility equipment to California wildfires, leading to substantial fines and penalties. Pacific Gas & Electric is also facing trial for manslaughter over its role in the Zogg Fire.
