Canada’s House of Commons elects first Black speaker

Greg Fergus has been elected as the new speaker of Canada’s House of Commons, making him the first Black Canadian to hold the position. The election followed the resignation of Anthony Rota, who stepped down after honoring a man who fought for a Nazi military unit during World War II. Fergus, a Quebec Liberal lawmaker, promised to lead with respect and called on his fellow lawmakers to do the same. He likened the role of the speaker to that of a referee in hockey, emphasizing that the stars are the ones who are truly watched.
