‘Right to equality guarantees factual not formal equality’: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court ruled that the fundamental right to equality mandates factual, not formal equality. Chief Justice Chandrachud’s judgement allowed states to create sub-classifications within Scheduled Castes for quotas, provided classifications are based on real, pertinent differences and have a rational relation to the law’s purpose.
