Google has revealed its research into audio plethysmography (APG), which will allow heart rate monitoring to be added to active noise cancelling headphones and earbuds through a simple software upgrade. The technology works by sending a low-intensity ultrasound signal through the headphones, which is modulated by the ear canal skin displacement and heartbeat vibrations.
