How the ‘octopus’ became a symbol of anti-semitism
Climate activist Greta Thunberg deleted a social media post supporting Palestine after critics claimed that a stuffed blue octopus in the photo could be seen as an anti-Semitic symbol. Thunberg later explained that she was not aware of the symbol’s connotations and that the toy was used by autistic people to communicate feelings. The use of octopus imagery in anti-Semitic propaganda dates back to the late 19th and early 20th century, where it was used to portray Jews as controlling and manipulating various aspects of society.
