The rapid military build-up in Japan is causing concern among residents of the Okinawa islands. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s plan to double defense spending to deter China’s military actions against Taiwan has led to increased tensions between the region and the central government. The governor of Okinawa, Denny Tamaki, expressed worries about the lack of explanation and understanding from the government. Okinawa’s historical experience in World War Two, as well as recent China’s military activity near the islands, has heightened concerns. Tamaki is seeking international support to oppose the relocation of US military units in Okinawa.
