Mental health expert flags huge gap between patient numbers, treatment

Dr. Shilpa Pandya, a psychiatrist and coordinator of the district mental health program for South Goa, has highlighted a significant treatment gap in mental health care. Despite increased awareness, she states that 70-90% of those affected do not seek treatment. The COVID-19 pandemic has also resulted in a 35% rise in mental health cases. To address this gap, Pandya’s team provides services at the South Goa district hospital and conducts outreach programs in villages. Additionally, a free 24×7 Tele Manas service is available for individuals to seek help over the phone. An exhibition was organized to increase awareness and destigmatize mental health issues.
