Governor Gavin Newsom has signed legislation in California that expands the state’s conservatorship system to allow for the involuntary detention and treatment of individuals with untreated mental illness and addiction issues. The new law broadens the definition of “gravely disabled” to include those unable to meet basic needs due to untreated mental illness or substance abuse. The aim is to provide care to homeless individuals who refuse help under current laws.
