‘Polythene bank’ to tackle plastic menace in Dehradun
The Garhi Cantonment Board in Dehradun has established a ‘polythene bank’ to address plastic waste. Citizens can deposit plastic waste and receive compensation in return. The campaign has already collected 30 kg of plastic bags in the first week. The board is engaging various groups, such as ragpickers and slum dwellers, to collect plastic bags. They offer a payment of Rs 3 for every kilogram of waste. The board plans to expand its reach through social media campaigns and a dedicated app. The collected plastic will be recycled into reinforced materials like tiles and boards.
