Punjab govt to give ‘martyr’ status to Agniveer
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has criticized the Agnipath scheme, which recruits soldiers for a four-year tenure. He argued that soldiers like Agniveer Amritpal Singh, who sacrificed their lives, should not be discriminated against. The Army, however, maintains that the policy guided his treatment. Mann called on the central government to review or shelve the scheme. He handed over a cheque of Rs 1 crore to Singh’s family and promised to build a stadium and erect his statue in his honor. The Aam Aadmi Party has also criticized the Agnipath scheme.
