India’s elephant population has decreased by almost 20% from 19,825 in 2017 to 15,887, as shown by the latest estimation conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India and state forest departments. This significant drop is attributed to the change in counting methods, from a headcount in 2017 to DNA analysis in 2022-23.
