The ‘Tiger cub’ who roared on stage

M.D. Ramanathan (MDR), a renowned Carnatic musician known for his deep baritone and slow pace of rendering, is being celebrated in his centenary year. His mature style, which goes against the contemporary trend of speed and scales, continues to be relevant. MDR’s close relationship with his guru, ‘Tiger’ Varadachariar, greatly influenced his musical style and even his mannerisms. MDR’s tutelage under Tiger began when he joined Kalakshetra for a music course. He later became a teacher and principal at the institution. Despite singing at a low pitch, MDR’s artistry and unique compositions made him a respected figure in the world of Carnatic music. His legacy is being honored through a Malayalam novel, a documentary, and the opening of an MDR memorial.
