Drug lord’s hippos face cull in Columbia

Colombia plans to reduce the population of Pablo Escobar’s hippos, with some being sterilized, others transferred abroad, and a few euthanized. Efforts to control the hippos’ rapid increase through sterilization and relocation have failed due to lack of natural predators and the ideal environment for reproduction. Hippos were recently labeled as an invasive species, allowing for population reduction. The Ministry of Environment is working on export protocols and developing a plan for euthanasia as a last resort.
