Lucknow has a rich sporting history, from hosting the first cricket World Cup match to its love for hockey and indoor games. The city’s passion for outdoor games like kite-flying, pigeon-flying, and rooster-fighting was balanced with a preference for indoor games that didn’t involve much physical exertion. Card games like rummy and teen patti, as well as chess and board games like pachisi and chaupar, were popular in Lucknow. In the 1980s, carrom clubs became intensely popular, but the rise of dish TV in the 1990s led to a decline in traditional indoor games.
