Global body suspends Delhi zoo membership amid concern over African elephant’s welfare

Delhi’s National Zoological Park has been suspended by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums due to concerns over the treatment of an African elephant, Shankar, kept in chains since 2005. The zoo must either improve Shankar’s welfare or relocate him within six months to avoid permanent termination of membership. The zoo can appeal the decision within 60 days.
