The Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, has announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the 22 people who died due to drowning in various incidents across the state. The casualties mostly occurred on Saturday when women went to take a holy dip during the festival of Jivitputrika. The drowning incidents were attributed to the uneven riverbed caused by rampant sand mining. CPI (ML) activists staged a protest demanding compensation for the families affected by the drowning incident.
