Kolkata hostel where Sheikh Mujibur Rahman envisioned Bangladesh
Bangladesh witnessed turmoil leading to the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government and vandalism of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s statues and museum. In contrast, Kolkata’s Baker Hostel at Maulana Azad College preserves his legacy. During his stay from 1945-1946, Room 24 became a vital space for his early leadership activities. The West Bengal government honored him by converting Rooms 23 and 24 into a museum in 1998. Mujib’s bond with Kolkata persisted despite his absence from 1947 to 1972, emphasizing his historic significance and his connection to India’s support during Bangladesh’s liberation.
