Latin American leaders make appeal to US on migration

Latin American leaders have called on the United States to change its approach to illegal migration at a summit held in Mexico. The leaders urged destination countries to end inconsistent and selective policies and to provide legal and safe paths for migrants seeking a better life. The dangerous journey across the US-Mexico border resulted in 686 deaths or disappearances last year. This issue is becoming politically significant in both the US and Mexico, as they both have upcoming presidential elections. The summit was attended by leaders from Venezuela, Cuba, and Colombia, among others.
