NID tapes soundtrack of post-Independence India
The National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad, India, was one of the earliest places where experimental electronic music was created in an Indian context. Faculty members and students were trained by American composer David Tudor on a Moog synthesizer in 1969. These early experiments led to the creation of the “NID Tapes,” a collection of 19 tracks that blend Moog synthesizer sounds with traditional Indian instruments. The “NID Tapes” have gained global acclaim and are considered historic recordings in the evolution of electronic sound with an Indian identity.
