Relief for habitual offender who sought speedy trial
The Delhi High Court has ruled that the right to a speedy trial cannot be compromised, regardless of an accused person being a habitual offender or absconder. The decision came in response to a petition by a murder accused who had been awaiting trial for 14 years, requesting that proceedings against him be concluded within two months. The court stated that although the petitioner was a habitual offender facing trial in multiple cases, this did not justify denying his constitutional rights. The High Court ordered the trial court to complete the proceedings within six months.
