Remove deepfakes within 24 hours of complaint: Government
The Indian government has instructed social media platforms like Instagram, X, and Facebook to remove deepfake videos within 24 hours of receiving a complaint. The move comes after an actress complained about a deepfake video circulating on social media. The advisory mentions that social media intermediaries should observe due diligence and remove or disable access to such content. Failure to comply with the requirements could result in legal action. The government has urged those affected by deepfakes to file a First Information Report (FIR) and seek remedies under the Information Technology (IT) rules.
