RS passes new CEC bill amid opposition walkout

The Rajya Sabha enacted a bill to regulate the appointment and service terms of the Chief Election Commissioner and election commissioners. The bill addresses qualifications, search committee, selection committee, compensation, resignation, removal, leave, and pension. The bill was enacted following a response from the Union law minister, who stated that the Election Commission will continue to “work independently”. It was tabled in response to a Supreme Court decision. The amendments recommended by the opposition parties were rejected.
