Scientists using AI to decode secrets of ancient Pompeii scroll
Scientists are using artificial intelligence to decode an ancient scroll that was unearthed from the ruins of Pompeii. The scroll, which was discovered in 18th century Herculaneum, is believed to be linked to a villa owned by Julius Caesar’s father-in-law. Two students have already deciphered the first word, which means “purple” in English. The rest of the text remains a mystery. Researchers from the University of Kentucky have been working on decoding the scroll since March, offering a cash prize to the team that successfully reads at least four separate passages.
