Thankful Wayanad survivors recount how elephants stood guard for them
Sujatha Aninanchira and her family survived a landslide at Chooralmala that flattened their home. Trapped under debris, they managed to escape and climbed a hillock only to encounter wild elephants. Remarkably, the elephants did not harm them, seemingly understanding their plight. They spent the night near the elephants until they were rescued in the morning. Sujatha, a tea picker at the Harrisons Malayalam Tea Estate for 18 years, shared her harrowing experience at a relief camp in Meppadi GHSS, recounting how the roof collapsed, leaving her daughter injured, but ultimately leading them to safety.
