Upper castes make 76% HC judges who joined post 2018

Upper castes dominate appointment of high court judges, with 76% of judges appointed since 2018 belonging to this category. No provision for reservation in appointment of judges of Supreme Court and HCs. Data on representation of OBCs, SCs, STs, and minorities among judges of HCs not centrally maintained. Out of 650 High Court Judges appointed since 2018, 492 belong to the general category, 20 to SC, 12 to ST, 77 from OBC category, and 36 belong to minorities. Government encourages social diversity and women representation in appointment of judges.
